Asus N61JQ-XV1 Review by Richie
I will admit, this thing did get me a little worried at first. It's fast, quiet, cool, just really nice all around. There was a lot of the mentioned bloatware to remove, and then you have to make recovery and backup discs, set up the gazillion preferences throughout windows 7 and all it's utilities and programs. The asus utilities and programs aren't all that bad either, the driver program just saved my butt... which leads me to my issue that I had:
So when I thought I was ready to rip, I figured I would warm it up nice and easy with something that I could crank the graphics up all the way and just enjoy and feel the machine out. So I install Assassin's Creed and everything just seemed a bit off. Even other people were suprised that it seemed a bit choppy, clipping errors on peoples faces and crap like that going on. Then inevitably the freeze, game locks up, goes to black and the sound just locks on whatever note it was on, hard reboot. It does this every time, so I thought it was a heat thing, because I had pandora playing music, a few tabs open on internet explorer, and the game going full screen, and the air coming out of the exhaust is pretty hot. So I put the computer on a box of frozen steak and a cold fan blowing at the exhaust, no change, had a beer and a steak. Check online forums, a couple people note sound driver issues, some had machines with soundblaster and realtek so they deleted SB and problem solved. Others deleted realtek and problem solved. I had no SB so I deleted realtek and the SRS real sound addon. No fixy. For the heck of it I check driver updates, lone behold there's an ATI video driver update for the 5730 as of 12/13/10! PROBLEM SOLVED. But of course then I had deleted all that sound software, which is where the Asus driver program became awesome.
I just blew two hours in Assassin's Creed, so smooth, no issues, I can't wait to get Black Ops.
Everything else there is to say has already been said, it's an awesome value and I can't wait to see what this machine is really capable of.
Cliff notes:
UPDATE ATI VIDEO DRIVER and all is good.
Really take the time to go through all the utilities and tools while you're setting up the machine. Remove what you'll never use.
Asus N61JQ-XV1 Review by Kilgore Trout
Pros: - Combination of i7-740 and ATI 5730 is pretty good for the price.
-4 gigs of DDR3 RAM expandable to 8 gigs, which is a good option to have if I feel like upgrading in the future (and I probably will).
- 7,200 RPM HDD
- I actually like the keyboard and the track pad, although the track pad took some getting used to. The biggest issue I had was accidentally allowing my fingers to drift closer or further apart while trying to use the two-finger scroll, causing the browser to zoom in or out on the page instead of scrolling. Now that I've figured that issue out, I actually think the track pad works pretty well.
- I think the speakers are awesome for a laptop. They get pretty loud without distortion. The sound with headphones is very nice as well.
-USB 3.0 port is pretty cool, once I get a USB 3.0 device that can interface with it.
- Runs very quiet and relatively cool.
Cons: - More bloatware than you can shake a stick at.
- HDD is curiously partitioned. I don't understand why manufacturers continue to do this and think they are doing us a favor...
- Battery is what you'd expect -- I got 2 hours on power save mode while performing some basic tasks. (Side note, one piece of bloatware on this thing that I actually like is the ASUS power4gear hybrid program, which lets you adjust power management settings like screen backlight brightness and processor state, and then rotate between profiles at the push of a button)
- Screen resolution is lower than I would like, although the screen doesn't look too bad, all things considered.
- No blu-ray player, which would be a nice touch considering it has an HDMI port.
- The biggest issue I had with this computer was connecting it to the Internet. I live in a studio apartment so I was just going to connect using Ethernet from my router (which isn't wi-fi equipped). I got the dreaded error 651 no matter what I did. I spent about an hour on the phone with ASUS tech support. He couldn't help me and said he would do some research and e-mail me later, which was a complete joke. That was a couple weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything. I eventually bit the bullet and bought a wireless router, which is working great, but ASUS tech support continues to live up to its bad reputation.
Conclusion: As a PC gamer, it's hard for me to separate the reason I bought this computer and the things I wish it could do. I would like for it to play all my games at max settings @ 60 FPS, but that's just not possible with this hardware. This is not a gaming desktop replacement, but it's really not meant to be. This is an all-around decent performing laptop that is portable and will allow me to do some gaming on the road, and for that I feel like it is very reasonably priced (I got mine during the Cyber Monday sale for $850). And I have done some gaming with it -- L4D 1 and 2 and TF2 all run fine at moderately high settings, and for those who care, this laptop scores a 5815 in PCMark Vantage and an 8170 in 3DMark 06, which are far from record-setting but are still acceptable. The screen resolution and lack of blu-ray were sacrifices I was willing to make to get a computer in this price range, and the HDD partition and bloatware are kind of the inherent vice of buying a manufacturer's system. The biggest disappointment was my difficulty connecting to the Internet via Ethernet and the subsequent interaction I had with Asus tech support. I have never dealt with them before, but I can tell you now that all the rumors you hear about their bad tech support are true.
Asus N61JQ-XV1 Review by Bigtime geek
This Asus Laptop PC is a great computer all around. First, let me say, I have owned many computers over the years, and I work at a help desk and previously worked as a Computer Technician at a major retailer. This computer is the best 849.99 I've ever spent. If you're into gaming, (if not skip to next paragraph) I've been able to play World of Warcraft, Call of Duty Black OPS, Team Fortress 2, and more, with Maximum resolution, with no lag. In fact, it outperforms my custom built desktop PC that I paid over 1000 dollars for a year ago. For more advanced tech users, my FPS is over 60 at all times on max resolution with high graphic detail. Pretty impressive I must say. HOWEVER - IF you are planning on doing any kind of gaming, buy a cooling pad. Though I haven't seen performance suffer yet, this thing gets REALLY hot, REALLY fast, especially if you're gaming.
In other notes, this computer is ridiculously fast. On other computers, Id restart the computer, usually go and come back 30 seconds to 3 minutes later. With this laptop, I barely even have enough time to get out of my seat before its already back into windows after a restart. Multitasking is great, It has done everything I have asked it to do with ease. Style wise its pretty nice, the keyboard is comfortable and it has a full numpad, although the 0 is kind of hard to hit if you're used to the traditional numpad. The Bluetooth is cool especially if you're an iphone or droid user, for Iphone tethering, essentially giving you internet anywhere you go (havent done this yet but plan to). Also the webcam's quality is better than most integrated ones ive seen in the past.
Screen Resolution wise, its 1366x768 isnt bad at all. I know alot of people prefer the 1920x1080 but its truthfully comfortable with the screen resolution it has already. The screen is really nice and bright and its definition is outstanding. The speakers dont go quite as loud as I would hope, but not many laptops do.
Last, note the Hard drive is 7200 RPM. This thing really moves, and you can see a difference, and also the USB 3.0 is great too. Data transfer time is non existent.
OVerall, 5 Stars. Only thing I would suggest is to get a cooling pad and definitely a wireless mouse.
